Fear 2 Freedom's (F2F) University Campaign partners hospitals and community organizations with colleges and universities to provide F2F Aftercare Kits to victims of sexual assault. Working with university partners host a "Celebration Event" on their campus, participating students ear from a variety of potential speakers including a survivor who has gone from fear to freedom, a forensic nurse, the university president or administration, and F2F staff. At the end of the speaking portion of the program, each college student assembles a F2F Aftercare Kit that will be delivered to a local hospital and/or community organization to then be given to victims undergoing a PERK exam. As part of this Kit, each student is also asked to write an encouraging note to the victim who will be receiving the Kit. This helps the student think about the victim and, hopefully, empower them to "Be the Change" and "Restore the Joy!" in today's society.

History |
Fear 2 Freedom was founded in 2011 by Rosemary Trible, who's husband is President of Christopher Newport University (CNU) in Newport News, Virginia. Her passion for this issue began when she was 25 years old and was violently raped at gunpoint. After going through her own healing journey, Rosemary dedicated her life to walking alongside the wounded and helping them find their joy again. With her 20 years as the first lady on a college campus, she has first-hand experience with the issue of sexual assault on our nation's campuses. |
Theory of change |
Fear 2 Freedom believes that by educating our college students about sexual assault and how to prevent it from happening, they will feel empowered to be the change in our society. |
Research informed |
The "2" in our name reflects that every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. During the speaking portion of the program, the students are informed of several statistics regarding sexual assault on college campuses. We also provide a resource card in each of the Aftercare Kit that provides statistics and hotline phone numbers for the recipients of these Kits. |
Trauma informed |
As part of our program, a survivor of sexual assault and/or a forensic nurse speaks to the students about their trauma or work. They share personal stories of hope and healing encouraging those in the audience to be the change on their campus and in society. We often hear from students in the audience about their struggles as well. |
Evidence based |
At the end of the event, we ask each attending student to complete a survey about the effectiveness of the program. We also have follow-up calls with the college's supporting staff and the forensic nurses to discuss possible ways to improve our program. |

Accolades |
At one event, a young man shared that he had been raped by his elementary school teacher, and this had greatly impacted his life. As he walked his Fear 2 Freedom Aftercare Kit to the hospital, he said it was good to finally be able to do something good for others who had also been hurt by abuse. “I can’t imagine doing the PERK exam without these F2F Kits.” ~ Beth Walters, Forensic Nurse at Riverside Health Systems “To walk out of the hospital in fresh clean clothes that no one has worn before you means someone thought about you before you ever arrived at that hospital. Someone cared enough to simply stuff a box; such a sweet, sweet simple act of kindness. Such a wonderful gift of hope.” ~ Debbie Smith, Debbie Smith Act, 2004. This act provides federal funding for DNA analysis from PERK exams. |
