History |
MVP Strategies is the program founded by Jackson Katz in 1997 to further develop and expand the work of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program that Katz co-founded in 1993. The original MVP was created by a grant from the US Department of Education to develop a model program that would engage young men -- initially college student-athletes -- in the prevention of gender violence, gay-bashing and other forms of bullying behavior. MVP was the first large-scale prevention effort in the sports culture and the U.S. military. |
Theory of change |
MVP Strategies operates on the premise that the ultimate way to reduce acts of sexual assault, relationship abuse and other forms of gender violence is to challenge and interrupt the gendered social norms that underlie most abusive behavior, and that also undermine attempts to prevent it. We teach intervention skills, but in the larger context of education for social justice. A key goal is to empower individuals with a sense of themselves as agents of non-violent social change, both within their immediate peer culture as well as with others. |
Research informed |
Yes. MVP Strategies trainings meet all of the criteria for programs that are based on the core components of the most effective programs. |
Trauma informed |
It is trauma-informed to the extent that awareness about recent research about the effects of trauma on victims, perpetrators and bystanders is infused in curricular and training materials. |
Violence Against Women Act |
From its beginnings in the early 1990s, MVP has focused not only on sexual assault prevention but also on the prevention of domestic violence, teen dating violence, and stalking. MVP Strategies trainings also contain "bystander" prevention training, as well as components on consent and the role of alcohol. |
