Heather and Willie have been dating for 7 months. This is the first relationship Heather has been in. One night the couple join their friends at a house party. People are drinking and having a good time. When Heather decides to leave, Willie suggests that they stay and be alone. Heather tells Willie that she is not ready which enrages him. Out of anger, Willie verbally insults Heather and physically restrains her. The same friends at the party decide to walk away. They do not want to partake in the couples "drama". Heather expected to fend for herself is blind-sided by the abuse. Domestic Violence can happen directly in front of us. Anyone can be a victim and it is time we pay attention to the signs before toxic situations turn into dangerous realities. Who will stand up for our victim? Will it be you?
Pure Praxis tailors each performance to challenge your community to think critically, boost their confidence and to teach them to trust their instincts. Using a team of skilled and diverse Performance Facilitators and Actor-Advocates we explore the topic and complexities of sexual assault. We promote social change by using live, improvisational theater to re-create difficult real world situations so audiences can rehearse their ideas and move from passive observer to active bystander. We create complex character scenarios based on real life to challenge and empower audiences. Every performance is guided by audience participation making every show unique.

Theory of change |
Our program strategy is rooted in the process of praxis; the fusion of theory and application. We connect with our audience to establish a rapport. We want them to feel confident and supported in their efforts. By involving the audience in the process of our performance we complete the idea of praxis. We provide theory and research and the audience delivers the ideas and practice. |
Research informed |
Our research influence is Augusto Boal and his Theater of the Oppressed methods. Additionally, we stay up to date with current events, relevant research, and statistics on the subject matter of sexual violence to incorporate in our live discussion. We also work with each client to personalize our performance so their community can identify with the characters and the scene. |
Trauma informed |
Our work is based on Performance Therapy techniques, sexual assault statistics, anonymous testimonials and survivor’s confidential stories. We also have several survivors on our performance team who imbue the content with their personal experiences. |
Violence Against Women Act |
Our entire team are trained Victim Advocates through EVAWI (End Violence Against Women International) |
Title IX |
Our program is compliant with Title IX because we highlight the voices of both female and male survivors and encourage audience members of all gender identities to safely enact active bystander methods to discourage a sexual assault or prevent the harassment or retaliation that often follows an assault or a report of an assault. |
