Sex Signals is Catharsis Productions’ longest running sexual assault prevention program. It has evolved since its creation in 2000 to focus on bystander intervention through the use of a research-supported, interactive theatre-based model of education. The program is known for its strategic use of humor in reframing the concepts of rape culture, privilege, and consent across gender identity and sexual orientation in relevant and accessible ways.
The program employs a two-person team of highly-trained educators. They lead audiences in an exploration of how corrosive sexual norms limits our ability to identify unhealthy and predatory sexual behavior and how that imperils our ability to intervene to support the vulnerable and hold aggressors accountable. The program incorporates multiple strategies, including improvised scenes, scripted-but-interactive components, and facilitated dialogue on the core issues with audiences. This culminates in a focused discussion on the role we all can play in ending sexual violence. Audiences will be able to positively change the way they think, communicate, and act by incorporating the principles of bystander intervention in all aspects of their life.
Catharsis Productions' Sex Signals incorporates scripted dialogue, audience-driven improvised scenes, and a focused, presenter-led discussion designed to analyze and interrogate the components of a rape-supportive culture. The program also utilizes humor as a strategic teaching device, engaging audiences and framing the issue in ways that reduce resistance to the content ...
