Alegria Technologies provides violence recovery and prevention solutions to higher education, secondary education, corrections and industry. The mission of Alegria Technologies is ‘utilizing technology to restore the joy to victims of violence.” The company currently deploys two products in the campus violence recovery and prevention space. Keys to Coping is an online campus sexual assault reporting tool. Keys to Courage is an awareness program. Keys to Courage training sessions are delivered face to face and optimally are tailored toward audiences of approximately 40 participants. Each 90 minute session includes responding to electronic campus climate survey questions, interactive skits, a case study, and testimony from a campus sexual assault victim. All sessions are taught by former collegiate athletes and Greek Life members. Sessions can be customized by affinity group such as: Divine Nine Sororities, Division I Football Teams, Women’s sports or Student Government Leaders. In addition, Alegria Technologies fulfills a research mission with the Keys to Courage Project. The Keys to Courage Project mission is to conduct research on underrepresented minority groups and affinity groups such as Greek Life and Athletics. Customized reports include but are not limited to an analysis of: Campus Climate, Bystander Efficacy, Intent to Help and Individual risk factors for abuse. At the conclusion of each training, the institution receives an evaluation report detailing their student’s responses to survey data collected.

Background

History
The program was created as a companion training program to supplement the implementation of an online campus sexual assault reporting tool. Our company’s inaugural product is an online campus sexual assault reporting tool called Keys to Coping. Keys to Courage is the companion training that encourages the use of Keys to Coping to report an incident as a bystander. However, institutions are not required to subscribe to the Keys to Coping to have the Keys to Courage training. Originally the content was developed for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and included multicultural interactive vignettes as a content component. Additionally, Keys to Courage has been customized for athletes and Greek life as well as for schools who opt not to license Keys to Coping online reporting tool. An institution does not need to procure the Keys to Coping online campus sexual assault reporting tool to acquire the Keys to Courage Training. The CEO and developer, Dr. Penny Smith, is an 18 year government and higher education administrator and a survivor of campus sexual assault.
Theory of change
Keys to Courage Training is informed by research conducted by Prochaska and DiClemente’s Transtheoretical Model of Change. The TTM references five stages of change and ten key processes of change (Prochaska, et al, 2008). The model has been applied in smoking cessation, weight management, interpersonal violence and child maltreatment interventions. Keys to Courage deploys the model by promoting the first three stages of the 5 stages of change. The three stages that the training seeks to accomplish are: pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation. The action and maintenance stages although not directly address, are measured in terms of the participant’s intent to intervene. The primary goal of Keys to Courage is to reduce the bystander effect among college students related to sexual misconduct and relationship violence. The content focuses on the TTM processes to increase the intent to intervene and assist victims to report who may disclose to their peers. The activities and content also embody the principles of social norm theory. The content addresses the concepts of false consensus and pluralistic ignorance by revealing healthy norms in order to reduce participation in problematic behaviors and increase engagement in healthy behaviors.

Trauma informed
The content was developed in alignment with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Guidance for a Trauma Informed approach. The content and pedagogy incorporates the six key principles of a trauma informed approach which are: 1. Safety 2. Trustworthiness and Transparency 3. Peer Support 4. Collaboration and Mutuality 5. Empowerment, Voice and Choice 6. Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues. For example, the vignettes discuss how sexual misconduct and hazing can intersect in athletics and Black Greek Letter Organizations. Thus, incorporating cultural, historical and gender issues in the content. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
